The Department, which maintains a Northern focus, offers baccalaureate degrees in Anthropology (B.
A.
, B.
S.
, and a minor), a minor in Cultural and Natural Resource Management, and a Master’s degree in Applied Anthropology with two emphases (applied cultural anthropology and cultural resource management).
We maintain facilities dedicated to anthropological scholarship, including three archaeological processing labs, a GIS computer lab, a cultural anthropology lab, a bioarchaeology lab, and a repository for faunal collections of Alaska Consortium of Zooarchaeologists.
We seek a collegial individual who will complement our faculty’s interests, support our undergraduate programs, and work to grow our graduate program.
Scholars with research focus outside of Alaska are welcome to apply with the willingness to expand their programs to include the North.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Evidence of a potential for successful teaching, service, and research activity.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Potential to establish an independent research program that will build on and add to existing research in the department.
Knowledge of contemporary curricular content for archaeology.
Evidence of research focus related to the pre-contact North American archaeology.
Evidence of potential to develop and maintain research program related to Alaska archaeology.
Ability to establish connections within and outside the university.
Ability to represent the department in the University.
Advanced graduate-level training in archaeology.
Experience in field archaeology.
Preferred Experience & Education: Specialization in environmental archaeology, zooarchaeology, and/or Indigenous archaeology.
Familiarity with and experience implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Knowledge of the Alaska context, Alaska Native people, and Alaska communities.
Experience designing and conducting collaborative projects with local and/or Indigenous communities.
College-level teaching experience both online and in the classroom.
Required Experience & Education: PhD in Anthropology with an emphasis in archaeology, or PhD in Archaeology.
ABDs will be considered but employment is contingent on conferral of degree by time of hire in August 2024.
Research focused on archaeology of the North Pacific Salary Information: This is a 9-month, full-time appointment with an expected start date in August 2024.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
This position will be working at the Anchorage campus.
This is not a remote position.
Salary will be based upon applicable academic preparation and experience complete with a competitive employee benefits package, including tuition waivers for employees and family members, affordable medical, dental and vision coverage, and representation under a Collective Bargaining Unit.
