Adjunct positions are on a semester appointment basis.
Successful acceptance into the adjunct pool does not guarantee an offer of an appointment nor does having worked one semester guarantee an offer of employment in the following semester.
This is an adjunct labor pool and applicants are hired based on departmental need.
Responsibilities before, during and after a course include: Knowing all HPER policies and procedures including accident response policies Ensuring all policies and procedures are followed by employees, volunteers and participants Being familiar with any off-campus site’s emergency and other policies and procedures Setting a tone of open communication Seeing that any required personal safety equipment is used by all participants Seeing that required group safety equipment is accessible at all times during a course Role modeling exemplary behavior in the area of personal care Role modeling exemplary risk assessment and risk management behaviors Debriefing with the HPER Department at the end of the course as needed Providing accountability for any deviation from policy by bringing the matter to the attention of the HPER Department Being responsible for the physical and emotional safety of all employees, volunteers and participants of the course Completing the required grade reporting processes Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Pedagogy competencies o College-level (or higher) writing skills o Experience providing sequenced teaching methods o Experience providing feedback and formal evaluation o Good presentation and speaking skills o Experience using a variety of teaching styles o Experience teaching the adult learner as well as teaching participants with various abilities, experience levels and cultural backgrounds Proof of these prerequisites may be offered by way of previous employment, personal experience, certifications, demonstration, or any combination of these.
Preferred Experience & Education: 1) Physical fitness, personal gear requirements and other course prerequisites of the particular course the applicant will be instructing 2) Technical skills specific to the course activity that far surpass the level of skills taught in the course 3) A minimum of three years of experience as an active participant in the activity she/he will be instructing 4) Experience as an active participant in the activity she/he will be instructing within the last year (from the start of the course contract) 5) Experience leading or guiding (in a paid or unpaid capacity) in the course activity 6) CPR & First Aid Certification upon employment.
Required Experience & Education: Current certifications appropriate to the specific recreation, health or fitness course preferred.
3 years of college-level teaching experience preferred.
Salary Information: Salary is based on the number of previous semesters teaching experience within the University of Alaska.

This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open over the entire academic year.
This is an at-will, union represented adjunct position, and may be canceled based upon the needs of the university.
